As therapists, the western, individual healing models have left much to be desired. We created unraveling spot not as a place, but as an ideology that aims to offer connection with non-traditional healers for those of you looking for different ways to heal. Our therapists work at the edges of conventional models and understand that we are all interconnected in our healing journeys. It's not "what's wrong with you?" but rather "what happened to you?", "what didn't happen for you?", or even "what's going on all around you?" and how your body and nervous system have adjusted to manage.
Below are just a few of the therapeutic concepts unraveling spot is rooted in. Please review the About page for more about this ideology and check out our therapist profiles in the Therapists page to see if one of us might be the right fit for your healing journey.
This means we're not focused on "labeling" what's wrong, rather, we work toward understanding. Why do we take this approach? Though labels can be useful for some, the origin and use of these lables and their further development in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders has a violent and oppressive history in being used to further "other" and dismiss the real life concerns of marginalized groups of people in a systemic way which is ongoing to this day.
In surviving oppressive forces, the adaptations we develop can often appear "maladaptive" but make sense when viewed in context. We work with this understanding, rather than against it to help you really get to know yourself as you grow and shift in the therapeutic process.
Somatic means "of the body" or body-based. Our therapists are trained in various somatic therapies to help access your own body's wisdom in the healing process. The most powerful tool in your healing is you. This is often referred to as "bottom up" therapy rather than mainstream psychotherapy which are "top down" cognition-based therapies.
